Comcast just launched WiFi Motion, part of a new "Xfinity Shield" offering. It turns your Xfinity Gateway router and the devices connected to it into motion sensors, no cameras, just changes in the WiFi signal between the router and up to five devices. The app pings you when it detects movement. It's free, opt-in, and off by default.
Sounds like free home security. The catch is in the fine print.
What the terms actually say
Turning on WiFi Motion creates a timestamped record of movement inside your home. Comcast's own support page says it "may be required to disclose information generated by WiFi Motion in response to a valid subpoena, court order, search warrant, or other lawful legal process," and in "legal proceedings, dispute resolution, or emergency situations."
None of those require Comcast to tell you. So police could pull a log of when you woke, slept, and moved room to room, and you may never learn the request was made. Comcast says it doesn't actively monitor the data but does retain "information generated by the feature." It won't say exactly what it keeps.
Why it matters
It's the pattern we keep seeing: a genuinely useful feature that quietly turns your home into a data source others can subpoena. A motion log is intimate, it maps your daily routine. And once it lives on Comcast's servers, whether it gets shared is no longer your call.
What to do: lock down the router
WiFi Motion is opt-in and off by default, so the simplest move is to leave it off. If you, or anyone on your plan, turned it on, switch it off in the Xfinity app under WiFi Motion / Xfinity Shield. While you're in the router settings, close the other easy holes:
Change the admin password, the login for the router's settings, not your WiFi password. Many still ship with "admin/password."
Turn off remote management and WPS, so the settings can't be reached from the open internet.
Put smart devices (TVs, speakers, plugs) on a separate guest network, so a chatty gadget can't see your phones and laptops.
Update the firmware and turn on auto-updates, so known security holes get patched.
And watch the upsell: the "Shield Select" tier adds an indoor camera with AI recognition of people, pets, and packages. More capability, more data. If your rented gateway won't let you change these settings, you can buy your own router and drop the rental, you own the settings and the monthly fee stops.
